Welcome, SeaPac Conventioneers!
f you live in the Portland area and are not affiliated with any local or suburban clubs, this is for you. Also, if you've been a PARC member before and are looking us over once more, we also want to address you with this.
With the exception of the Clark County Amateur Radio Club, we are the oldest general-interest Amateur Radio Club in the
Portland metro area. The Portland Amateur Radio Club was organized and chartered in June, 1941, under the guidance of the late John Peel, W7LT. When it once again became possible for us to do so, we picked up his callsign for our club station and repeaters.
PARC has had a varied existence over the past 63 years, having been quite large on several occasions, and having also shrunk to a mere shadow of itself at times in between. The major suburban clubs (OTVARC and Hoodview) were formed (in OTVARC's case, re-formed) by groups of our members in their respective localities.
So, what do we do? PARC is probably best known for its
two 2-meter voice repeaters (W7LT/R, 146.84 and 146.94 MHz.), but that's just the tip of the iceberg. As an ARRL Special Services Club, we also conduct licensing classes, examinations, and support major activities during the year, such as the Portland Marathon. We also have a packet repeater on 147.18 MHz. Our Field Day operations have won their class nationally on several occasions.
Quite a number of prominent hams have been associated with the club over the years. The last Section Manager election in the ARRL was between 2 former officers of the club. Many well-known contesters and DXers have graced our ranks as well, having operated their first Field Days from W7KYC (our old club call).
Since you are
reading this copy of
the sPARC gap, you may have some interests about our activities, and we welcome you to join us for Field Day or to visit one of our meetings at some point in the future. We hope we can attract your interest in joining us on a more formal basis, as a result. Our Field Day activities will take place (as they have for the past 20 years) at Kelly Butte Park in Southeast Portland. We normally meet at One Liberty Center, 650 NE Holladay Street, Portland. A couple of times a year, we meet away from that location for a picnic (in the summer) or a banquet (in December). This newsletter will always have the location of our meetings. Please come by and check us out!
