Multnomah County ARES/RACES
January Meeting

he January meeting of Multnomah County ARES/RACES was held on January 23rd at the Portland Fire Bureau training center. The meetings are usually held on the fourth Thursdays of the month, starting at 7 p.m. and last approximately two hours. This month's topics included the necessity of a telephone tree and the best way to implement a workable model for our group. While a final draft was not assem-bled at the meeting, ideas for its completion were discussed. The new training manual updates were presented and handed out to participants needing them while those not having any of the mater-ials were treated to complete copies. To obtain these materials you can get them at the meetings or contact KK7UE for instructions on how to do so. Also discussed was the upcoming 'Quakex 03' SET exercise coming up in April. .This exercise is a FEMA region X exercise that will be run through-out the Northwest and Alaska. Our exact level of involvement hasn't been determined yet but hopefully that will all be worked out soon.

Stay tuned to the vhf ARES net for details to come. The ID card issue is progressing along with a few persistent glitches that should be rectified before spring. Most folks have been set up and are current. A demonstration of packet com-munication was set up on two different computers and those interested in that had fun. Mel, K7MBI, brought along his SSTV handhelds and the group had lots of fun sending and receiving the pictures. Amateurs interested in ARES within the metropolitan area are encouraged to contact me  at kk7ue@arrl.net or via telephone at 503-280-2283 evenings.
