ur
club was asked to assist with a parade to "Welcome Home"
Operation Iraqi Freedom military personnel from the US Marine
Corps 6th Engineering Support Battalion who served in Iraq. The
parade moved up Broad-way in downtown Portland on Saturday morning,
July 19th, and included other active duty personnel, with WWII,
Korea and Viet Nam veterans represented. The club placed
radio operators throughout the parade either walking or riding
floats and in vehicles. Our task was to report any problems back
to Net Control and to ensure the parade pace was steady.
The organizers were
pleased to have our assistance on short notice, and invited PARC
to assist in the next parade planned for Summer of 2004. The
following operators were in the parade: David Lutz, AC7NM, Jeff
Mathia, KF6CXD, Ed Burress, KC7GFX, John Rollins, KD7BCY,
Brian Hickock, KD7DSY, Daryl Croxell, KD7HWK, Rich Christie,
WA6TVX, and Bert Younglove, WA7AXO. Those at Net Control were
George Hickock, KC7PXF, Bruce McCain, N7XB, and Pete Rodabaugh,
W7PR.
All operators helped set up and dismantle the Net Control stations,
with suggestions and equipment from John White, K7RUN, and John
Pinkerton, K7ZSK. Thanks to all operators who helped July 19th,
it was fun and also demonstrated
our ability to respond!

Meeting
and VE Session Announcement
he
August general meeting will be a picnic on Friday evening, August
15th starting at 6:30 p.m. The location is Creston Park in Southeast
Portland. Access to the park is from SE 42nd Ave. then east 1
block on SE Rhone (the parking lot is actually 43rd Ave.).
Rhone is 1 block south of SE Powell Blvd. and 9 blocks north
of SE Holgate Blvd. Creston Park has a swimming pool, horseshoe
pits, tennis courts, playground and trails to walk. Parking is
near the tables.
While people will probably be bringing extra food, everyone is
pretty much responsible for making sure that he or she gets enough
to eat. There will be cooking facilities provided which
will include a barbecue grill (anyone got a gas grill they might
be able to bring? Please contact W7PR or KD7BCY if you
do).
We will have a Bunny hunt on 146.56 MHz following dinner, so
bring your handheld, attenuator and hunting antennas. Families
and friends are encouraged to attend.
An exam session will be held at the park, at the same time as
the picnic. The standard procedures will apply for pre-registration
and such. Please contact n7xb@arrl.net or
w7lt@arrl.net
or call 503-257-7320 to assure a spot in the test session.
There are a couple of things to note: no alcohol is permitted
in the park, and Creston Park is not an off-leash area for pets.
We must vacate the park by 10 p.m. Hope to see you all
at the picnic!
Additional note on getting there: If you use MapQuest or
any similar mapping software, set your destination address as
4300 S.E. Rhone St. or 3701 S.E. 43rd Ave. That will bring
you right to the parking lot, regardless of which direction you're
coming from. Otherwise, we'll talk you in. See
additional pictures and navigational aids on the back page.
