CROUCH TRAVELS, MOAB, UT 12 MAY 2001
March 7-13: We were in Moro Bay watching old sailing ship replicas playing in the bay, bike riding out to the docks for lunch and buying fresh fish for later, beach walks in shorts and T's. We checked out Cambria, a small resort community rather like Cannon Beach. I had seen a beautiful handmade Kaleidoscope there from an earlier trip and went back to buy-long gone of course. Somehow I thought it was a production item, not one-of-a-kind. Ah well. March 14-15: Traveling to Brenda, AZ about 20 miles east of Blythe, California on Highway 60 just north of I-10. Also 14 miles east of Quartzsite, AZ-the winter RV Mecca for about 1.5 Million snowbirds (rainbirds in our case). March 15-22: Brenda, AZ in Desert Gold RV Resort. We joined a large gathering of friends from the CompuServe RV Forum to catch up on happenings. Also had breakfast with RV Hams from all over the country. Arizona had an unusually cool and wet winter (glad we were on the warm coast!) but it produced the best wildflower crop in ten years I'm told. March 22-April 29: Tucson, AZ. We went wildflower watching, birding in Patagonia and up to visit the ski area at 8,000 feet on Mt. Lemmon for a picnic! Visited a bit with my sister, Joyce at their home in Green Valley just south of Tucson.

We bought a 1999 Newmar Dutch Star 38' diesel pusher motorhome! "The Dutchess" The old Shasta Roadmaster (known to us as Harley) was pretty nice but the new coach with slideout is much better for our full time RV lifestyle. Now I have to figure out how/where to install the ham gear. Lots of computers in this coach and I sure don't want to trash them with RF! My CW schedule with Lea Ball will have to wait for a while. April 29-30: Travelling to Moab, UT. Great drive in the new RV! April 30-May 13: Moab, UT Summer certainly seems to be here-even in Portland I'm told. Jodie and I are enjoying the wonderful stony scenery and resort atmosphere. Moab is a Mecca for mountain bikers, 4WD enthusiasts, hikers, rock climbers, rafters, and ATV users from all over the world! All sorts of languages spoken here. The awe inspiring scenery of Arches National Park with eroded sandstone bridges of myriad shapes/sizes, and Canyonlands National Park with chasms and pinnacles to astound the eye make eastern Utah a delight for my photographer urges. Pictures included for your enlightenment. A fellow RV friend/mountain bike enthusiast and I tried out one of the medium difficulty trails last week and managed to test our limits. The round trip was about 38 miles with the hills and "slickrock" adding to the challenge. Great fun!

We watched some of the hero bikers fairly well dance up the rock climbs we struggled with-very instructive. Could it be that my conditioning is not quite up to par? We purchased a new 2001 Saturn SL2 before we left Salem (we call her Sally) and it turns out she is a decent SUV as well. We took a scenic drive by switchbacks up the face of a cliff with our little sedan and she did an admirable job! Perhaps a little more care in picking our track but she went up that 20%+ grade with no problem. May 13-17 we travel to Boise, ID to see son Todd until the 22nd and then on to Portland from May 23rd until June 28th to move our remaining stuff to storage at Jodie's brother's place in Montana. Seapac and Field Day will be part of our plans in Oregon. July 20-23 will find us at the Glacier-Waterton International Hamfest at Three Forks Campground south of Glacier NP in Montana. From there-who knows? What a great life! Our 16 year old cat, Victoria loves it too.
Enjoy the pictures.
