    Week signal VHF/UHF
       PSK-31 reception!
Hola,
Greg, KJ6KO has recently placed a 5W beacon in CM88ws on 144.2767 beaming to  southern California.  I listened last night and heard nothing. This morning I turned the radio on and there it was.
The signal was weak but the trace of the signal could be seen about 95% of the time on the digipan display.  The signal was copyable on CW about 40% of the time.  The PSK31 printout was not as successful.  Only about 10% of  the time was I getting a printout of any valid data.  I never did receive a 100% line of text.  The best line of text was about 75% of valid data.  Many times I could see the signal on the digipan display but could not detect a signal by ear.
One might draw a conclusion that CW is a much better mode than PSK31, however there may be path/propagation irregularities that is distorting the received signal such that the PSK31 decoder is unable to process it accurately.  We will listen under different conditions and see if the PSK 31 signal decodes better.
The distance to the beacon is 498 miles and I was using an IC746 without a preamp.  The antenna is a homebrew yagi on a 28 foot boom.  N6CA near Los
Angeles was detecting the beacon at the same time with about the same results.
Thanks to Greg for putting the beacon on.

          New 2 Meter Beacon
    In Seattle Washington Area

A new 2 Meter Beacon is up and operating in it's permanent location in CM88!
     Please send signal reports, to
kj6ko@innercite.com
If it is strong enough way down south in San Diego, I may
boost the power and go with stacked Omni's! It is on 144.2825
plus or minus 100hz zero beat and it is PSK31/CW....the same as N6XQ's beacon in South Dakota .

For those of you who wanted to try 2 Meter PSK-31. Here's your chance.

There has been quite a lot of discussion about whether or not PSK-31 will work well on the VHF/UHF bands.

Check out the next Column for more on VHF/PSK-31
